VIII.

Nathan got dressed in his full police garb, preparing to head to work. It was early afternoon, and he was simply on traffic patrol for the day. Unless something got called in, he would have a fairly easy going time at work today, which was great considering yesterday.

As he pulled up to the station, officers that were leaving smiled and waved to him. He gave them a cheery grin and a wave as he went inside. He was one of the youngest in the force at that time, but he knew there’d be more fresh meat soon. It wouldn’t be long before more graduates would show up.

He stretched as he headed towards the police cars. He grabbed his keys from his desk, waved hello to the secretary and headed to his car. As he slid behind the wheel, he wondered what Tim was doing. He pulled out the new phone he had picked up on his way to work. It was programmed to have everything forwarded from his phone to this one, complete with the same number and everything.

He had a text message from Nathan that read ‘Going to get you set up in the guest room. Feel free to stay as long as you need.’ The text sent Nathan’s heart to his stomach. He thought that everything he had ever wanted was finally happening with Tim.

He shot a text back, ‘Why the guest room?’ before he started to drive around. His heart was pounding and he wasn’t thinking entirely straight. He drove through the street glancing around, occasionally looking towards his phone. Finally, his phone lit up brightly. Nathan pulled over to the side of the road, parked his car and read the message: ‘I just can’t do this. For so many reasons.’

Nathan sighed as he texted back. It took him some time to formulate just what he wanted to say: ‘What are the reasons? Cause I know you want this. And I obvs want this.’ He began to drive around some more. He loved working as a policeman. The job was mostly just driving around and making sure people were safe.

The final text he received from Tim simply said ‘we’ll talk about it later.’ With a heavy sigh, and a heavy heart, Nathan continued his patrol. He wondered just what was wrong with Tim. He knew that he had grown up with a strict father who regularly discouraged him. He had witnessed it several times over at home with him.

Nathan, on the other hand, was raised by a sweet woman who encouraged him to be himself. Of course, once he reached a certain age, she probably regretted it. He had always been outspoken, open minded and able to roll with the punches. It just wasn’t in him to not be himself. Though he had always had to hide his sexual orientation from strangers, his friends knew about it. They were incredibly accepting of it, too. He wondered if Tim had ever been accepted that way before.
